Wood based panel manufacturers protest against biomass subsidies

On 29th October wood based panel manufacturers across Europe staged a shutdown protest against subsidies for biomass energy.  According to an article published on the Wood Based Panels International website the purpose of the protest was to "expose the unintended consequences of subsidies for the energy use of woody biomass, putting the wood based panel sector and the entire woodworking industries at risk."  The article went on to state that "Allowing wood to be burnt before the end of its useful life is a waste and risks damaging the environment."

This position is in agreement with a recent paper on biomass entitled "Biomass - a burning issue"" by Nick Grant and Alan Clarke recently published on the AECB website

So, whilst biomass may come out on top in an assessment of potential emissions reductions, we should be very careful about recommending it.

A new organisation is being formed in the UK to promote the use of low impact building materials.  Renewable Buildings is a working group within the National Non-Food crops Centre and is intending to start its own independent organisation.  A key feature of the organisation is that it will act as the UK umbrella for NaturePlus - an eco-labelling system for building materials.

NaturePlus has been establsihed in parts of Europe for around 10 years, but will be launched in the UK on 29-31 October 2010 at the Big Green Home Show at the National Self Build Centre in Swindon.  NaturePlus supports the use of health, functional and low impact building materials.
