Refurbishment, Clifton, Bristol

Working with architects White Design undertook energy modelling using SAP, 2009 to produce predicted EPCs; advised on thermal envelope design; developed outline specifications for energy systems and advised the client, Footprint Building, on procurement of energy systems.

The image to the right shows Intello vapour retarder being installed around roof lights, above Steico-flex wood fibre insulation installed on internal walls.

Eco-refurbishment Costs

My presentation on Eco-refurbishment costs to the Green Register went well last night.  I hope people will be interested in the generic eco-refurbishment costs I have developed and I would welcome any contributions to my cost data set as well as any discussion of the method I have used.

The full content of my presentation is available here.

The Green Register End of Year Party

I have been invited to give a talk at the Green Register's end of year party on 8 December at Horizon House, home of the Environment Agency and winner of the BREEAM Offices Award 2010 (highest recorded score in the UK) designed by Bristol’s very own Alec French architects.

Programme:

17.00  Tour of Horizon House by Julian Feasby of the Environment Agency

17.30  Talk: ‘Eco-Refurbishment and The Green Deal:  Getting the Most Bang for your Buck’
Piers Sadler, director of Piers Sadler Consulting will discuss the implications of the Green Deal, its Golden Rule and consider where we should be concentrating our efforts if we want to get the most from the money we spend reducing energy consumption and making our homes more comfortable places to live.  The talk will cover: where energy usage and heat loss occur in our homes, condensation risk and eco-refurbishment, the relative benefits of renewable energy systems vs the fabric first approach and the economic implications of the Green Deal.

18.15  Drinks and nibbles (event closes at 18.45, retire to local pub)

Building Performance Evaluation Projects

Following a two stage competition, White Design and Piers Sadler Consulting were commissioned to undertake building performance evaluations at Rogiet and Oakham primary schools designed by White Design.  The energy in use of almost all buildings exceeds the design stage predictions, sometimes by considerable amounts.  The overall objectives of these studies are to quantify any such discrepancies, assess their causes and identify ways of reducing and reversing them.   Oakham is a sixth month study concentrating on the construction and handover of the building, whilst Rogiet is a two year study focussing on energy in use during the first years of occupation.
